In June 2021 I called Steve’s Outdoor Adventures and booked a moose hunt for 2023 in British Columbia. Shortly thereafter I started to receive their emails with hunting opportunities and I expressed a desire to complete the “Super Slam” and my desire to hunt was starting to make decisions for me that I probably would have never made!
In July 2021 an email came across my desk with one opening for a Grizzly Bear hunt, in early September in southwest Alaska. I jumped at the chance and said yes!! After a lot of preparations and a lot of help from Travis and Steve from Steve’s Outdoor Adventures I arrived at my hotel in Anchorage, Alaska on August 29, 2021. From the start it was obvious that my last hunt (Brown Bear) and this hunt (Grizzly Bear) would be quite different. Which is exactly what I wanted.
My previous Brown Bear hunt will probably be the greatest hunt I will ever have. I booked the Grizzly Bear hunt to find out what kind of hunter I was and will be. I am 61 years old, overweight, but with resources I never had before but with a nagging question about whether I was willing to change my lifestyle to achieve my hunting goals. I arrived in Port Alsworth without making contact with my guide or any knowledge if they even knew I was arriving.
Blind Faith, and Steve West told me everything was good and they were expecting me!! I arrived and a 12 year old boy on a 4 wheeler helped load all my gear and took me to the lodge where they were waiting for me.
Shortly thereafter I flew into camp in a “Super Cub” and my adventure begin. After getting unpacked my guide Jordan Weber and I took a walk to start glassing the area. Jordan spotted a BIG black grizzly several miles away. My spirits were high but a big knot was forming in my stomach!! I wanted to learn about myself and have a great adventure. I tossed and turned all night in our small tent (spike camp) set up on a side of a hill with meager amenities. What would I do tomorrow if I had a chance at the big Black Grizzly Bear. And the next day, after 5 or 6 miles of hiking and glassing, Jordan put me within 100 yards of THE great big Black Grizzly Bear. The moment of truth was upon me and I chose to pass this bear because I truly wanted to pursue a great “Blonde” grizzly with silver tips.
I wanted to know if I could hunt the old fashion way, put everything on your back and physically earn it! My guide Jordan was absolutely amazing. We hunted hard for 10 days, even changing camp locations once to see new terrain. And on the 10th day of hunting, the last day of my hunt and in the last hour of daylight Jordan spotted a “Blonde” grizzly several miles away. Jordan knew the mental gymnastics and the physical toll the last 10 days had taken on my “soft” mind and body. He looked at me asked “How much want to do you have left?”
I spoke from my heart not my legs and said “Let’s go”.
At 9 O’clock on the 9th day of September I made a great shot at 294 yards and my Grizzly Bear was down! Jordan Weber is a great guide and a better person to help an old man find out what he is made of… and after skinning out the bear we made it back to camp really late that night. I did not sleep a wink that night. I had a smile on my face and a renewed desire to continue hunting and to make some lifestyle changes. I had successfully taken an Alaskan grizzly bear. It wasn’t as big as the huge dark boar I had passed up on the first day, but it was a great “blonde” bear.
This hunt was the greatest adventure I have ever been on… Travis and Steve, you made possible the greatest adventure. And I will continue to be a client of “Steve’s Outdoor Adventure” until my heart fades or my body quits. Thanks for making 2021 a GREAT YEAR.
I Hope both Travis & Mr. West are a part of upcoming hunting adventures!!
Thanks,
Gregory B.
