Chama, New Mexico is known for three things. A scenic train ride, Cattle Ranching, and some of the best elk hunting in North America. This is one of those rare places where high elk densities and trophy quality can come together and provide hunters with a once in a lifetime elk hunting experience. We archery hunt in September and offer rifle hunts from October 1 through December 31.
The October dates provide hunters with a unique opportunity to rifle elk hunt while the bulls are bugling during the peak of the rut and experience the changing colors as the aspens turn from green to gold. In November the elk are generally still vocal as they start to gather into winter sized herds and bulls compete for the last of the unbred cows. And in late November and throughout December the high country snows force thousands of elk out of the high San Juans Mountains. These elk migrate through this ranch on their way to the winter range on the Jicarilla Reservation.
The lodge is managed by a chef, so the food is amazing. And the lodge has several double and single occupancy bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. The hunting is managed and staff of guides experienced and knowledgeable on the ranch makes sure everyone has a quality elk hunt. Success rates have always been over 90% each season on bull elk and approximately 80% of the bulls harvested are 6x6 or larger. This is almost unheard of in free-range and fair chase hunting conditions.
